Below, Ian shares more about his background, what inspired his career in training, and the key messages he aims to pass on to every delegate who attends a Eurosafe course.
Professional Background
Q. Tell us a bit about your background
I served for 25 years in the British Army, where I first developed my skills as a trainer, delivering instruction in high-risk, safety-critical environments. After leaving the military, I spent a year working as a forklift instructor before moving into the construction and utilities sectors.
I then spent eight years working across Lincolnshire as a plant instructor, NVQ assessor and course developer, gaining extensive experience in vocational training, assessment and compliance. This period really cemented my passion for developing people’s skills and helping organisations maintain high safety standards.
Q. What inspired you to get into training and how did you get started in this field?
Training felt like a natural progression for me. I had been involved in training and mentoring throughout my military career, so continuing down that path after leaving the forces made complete sense.
Since then, I have delivered and managed training for a range of well-known organisations including RAND, ESS Safeforce, Arco and Yorkshire Water. These roles allowed me to work across multiple industries and environments, further strengthening my understanding of health and safety, compliance and best practice.
I joined Eurosafe to return to delivering specialist confined space and work-at-height training, and to play a part in shaping how our courses continue to develop and evolve in line with industry needs.
Role at Eurosafe
Q. What’s the most important message you try to get across to delegates?
That safety genuinely matters. Everyone has the right to work safely throughout the day and to return home in the same condition they arrived. Training is not just about ticking a box or gaining a certificate. It is about understanding risks, making informed decisions and applying safe working practices every single day.
Q. What’s something your delegates might not know about you?
Outside of work, I am a keen cyclist and a proud Liverpool supporter. I enjoy keeping active and getting outdoors whenever I can.
