Confined Space Safety Overhaul for Major Manufacturing Site
Eurosafe was contacted by a former client who had recently joined a new organisation in a leadership capacity. Having experienced first-hand the value of our consultancy services, he reached out to address immediate safety concerns at his new site – specifically around Confined Space compliance.
The new employer, a major player in the UK manufacturing sector, had undergone a significant site expansion. However, no formal systems or documentation were in place to manage confined space hazards – no register, no risk assessments, and no SOPs. The client recognised the urgency and entrusted Eurosafe to provide a complete assessment and roadmap toward compliance.
The Requirements
- Identify all confined spaces and potential confined spaces across the site
- Evaluate associated risks under Confined Space Regulations 1997 and ACOP L101
- Develop a comprehensive Confined Space Register and a format to help tailor any Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
- Recommend training pathways and suitable rescue and safety equipment
- Align legacy and new site areas under a unified safety framework
- Support the client in achieving full compliance through clear, actionable guidance
The Process
We began with a full site audit, observing operational workflows from start to finish. Over the course of several days, we mapped and assessed each area where confined space risks were present or could develop under certain conditions.
Our findings revealed inconsistencies across old and new sections of the site. Although certain entry points appeared identical, differing access methods and work processes resulted in varying risk classifications—from Low Risk in one section to Medium Risk in another. These nuances were explained in detail to the client, reinforcing the importance of accurate assessments based on the presence (or potential presence) of Specified Risks.
We maintained clear, jargon-free communication throughout the engagement, bridging the gap between technical compliance and practical understanding. This approach enabled us to build trust with the entire management team and drive alignment on a long-term safety strategy.
Key Deliverables
- Full Confined Space Register
- Customised Risk Assessments and SOPs
- Site-specific recommendations for:
- Confined Space Rescue procedures and equipment
- Working at Height and Rescue from Height protocols
- Lifting and Slinging under LOLER regulations
- Trauma-based First Aid and extrication training
- Strategic roadmap for phased safety improvements during ongoing site works
- Client handover to Eurosafe UK’s Sales and Partner Network for next-stage implementation
The Outcome
By the end of the consultancy period, the client had a robust framework in place to manage confined spaces effectively – one that could evolve with their business and expansion. Our final report not only addressed existing risks but also helped the organisation adopt a proactive safety culture rooted in compliance, competence, and clarity.
With the support of their internal champion (our former client), we were able to fast-track management buy-in and set the foundation for a safer, smarter, and more resilient operational environment.
