Conrad Energy delivers power to commercial customers and to the National Grid via a network of flexible generation, battery, storage, and renewable energy projects across the UK. Amongst its network of 45 power generation assets is the 27-generator Red Scar project, which supplies energy to balance the grid during peak periods or when there is a shortfall.
The Requirement
At Red Scar, engineers have to regularly climb onto the generators to carry out routine and responsive maintenance of the fans and casings which are sited on top. Because they are using ladders to access the platforms housing the fans, there is a working at height requirement for a fall arrest solution to keep the engineers safe. With 27 generators, Conrad Energy was looking for a solution which could be used right across the site and moved around as required, but which could also cope with the space limitations and uneven ground.
The Solution
Eurosafe suggested a REID Porta Gantry as the ideal portable and cost-effective solution. A site demonstration was provided, along with Reid Lifting representatives, to show how easy the Porta Gantry is to assemble and move around, and how easily it could provide the fall clearance required to complete the fan maintenance.
We recommended a 1000kg Porta Gantry with an extra tall A-Frame and 4570mm beam. At almost 6m to the lifting eye, it can easily accommodate the height of the platforms on top of the generators and give maximum space for the engineers to work. It also has the necessary goods WLL of 1000kg and personnel WLL of 500kg, with three-person fall arrest capability. The unit was fitted with wind-up jack legs to provide an additional height boost and ensure that it could be adjusted as required for the uneven ground.

All PPE required to use the Porta Gantry was provided as part of the package, along with a full training session on the use of the PPE and the Porta Gantry itself.
