Ladder Safety in the UK: Why Training and Equipment Standards Matter More Than Ever

Ladders are one of the most widely used tools for working at height across the UK. However, they remain a significant source of injury and risk – often underestimated by those who use them regularly.

Recent data highlights the scale of the issue and reinforces a clear message: improving ladder safety requires more than experience alone. It demands proper training, reliable equipment, and a consistent approach to risk management.

The Reality of Ladder-Related Incidents in the UKimage showing worker with injury

The latest statistics reveal just how serious ladder-related incidents continue to be:

  • 7,791 hospitalisations in 2025 – an average of 21 every day
  • Average age of those injured: 59
  • 80% of incidents involve men
  • Approximately 50 fatalities each year – around one every week

These figures demonstrate that ladder incidents are not rare or isolated. They are a persistent issue affecting both workplaces and domestic environments.

Importantly, many of those involved are experienced users. This highlights a critical point: familiarity can lead to complacency, increasing the likelihood of accidents.

The Overlooked Risk: Ladder Equipment Failure

While unsafe use is often discussed, equipment reliability is an equally important factor.

Testing has shown that:

  • 14 out of 18 telescopic ladders failed under a 150kg load
  • Some failed at just 123kg

This raises serious concerns about the quality and suitability of some ladders currently in use.

Even when used correctly, substandard equipment can fail without warning. This makes proper selection, inspection, and maintenance essential components of ladder safety.

Why Ladder Safety Training Is Essential

Reducing risk requires more than basic instruction. Effective ladder safety training ensures users can:

  • Set up and use ladders safely in real-world conditions
  • Identify defective or unsuitable equipment
  • Understand load limits and environmental risks
  • Make informed decisions when working at height

At Eurosafe Training, our Ladder Association accredited ladder user and inspection courses are designed to go beyond compliance – focusing on practical competence and risk awareness.

Raising Standards Across the Industry

Improving ladder safety requires a combined approach:

  • Increased awareness of risks
  • Higher standards for equipment
  • Consistent, accredited training

Organisations that invest in these areas are better positioned to reduce incidents, protect their workforce, and meet their legal responsibilities.

Making Ladder Use Safer – At Work and at Home

Ladder safety is not limited to professional environments. The same risks apply in domestic settings, where formal training is often absent.

By prioritising training and using reliable, tested equipment, both individuals and organisations can significantly reduce the likelihood of accidents.
