Confined Space Entry: Medium Risk & Entry Controller (CSC09)
Our practical Working in Medium Risk Confined Space training course is designed for individuals whose roles require entry into enclosed environments where there is a moderate and predictable risk of hazardous atmospheres, trapped gases, or restricted movement.
A space is not classed as confined space because it is small or difficult to access; it must also present one or more specified risks as defined by legislation. A confined space medium risk is an enclosed area where potential hazards exist, but can be effectively controlled through appropriate risk assessments, safe systems of work, and the use of suitable equipment and procedures.
Our Working in Medium Risk Confined Space training course is designed for individuals working in medium risk confined space environments where there is a reasonably foreseeable chance that a specified risk may be present. The course teaches the essential procedures for working in confined spaces safely, ensuring that participants are fully prepared to work safely in medium risk confined spaces.
Accredited by City & Guilds confined space medium risk training is recognised for its quality, credibility, and alignment with industry standards, giving learners and employers confidence in the qualifications we deliver.
Participants will learn to safely enter and exit confined spaces, and be trained in the use of escape breathing apparatus for emergency situations. The course includes:
- Dealing with emergencies and managing emergency situations
- Risk assessment and preparing for work in medium risk confined spaces
- The role of the entry controller and the importance of designated responsibilities
- Using equipment and tools safely within confined space environments
For those who have already completed the 2-day CSC09 course or an equivalent, a 1-day re-assessment course (CSC09R) is available to refresh and reassess their knowledge.

Course Contents
- Definition of a confined space (HSE, C&G, Water UK NC1-NC4 classifications)
- Specified risks
- Duties under the regulations, preventing the need for entry
- Risk assessment and hazard identification
- Atmospheric hazards and gases
- Principles and use of gas detectors
- Safe systems of work and permits to work
- Roles, responsibilities, and entry controller duties
- Pre-use checks of equipment including correct donning and adjustment of harnesses
- Selection, adjustment and use of access equipment and PPE
- Inspection and use of escape breathing apparatus / response to emergency
- Control of safe entry and exit of entry team
Learning Outcomes
- Prepare to work safely in medium risk confined spaces
- Enter and exit medium risk confined spaces safely
- Prepare and use the escape breathing apparatus in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions
- Use equipment and tools safely, and in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions
- Follow procedures and work safely
- Deal with emergencies
- Use appropriate behaviour when working in medium risk confined spaces
- Understand legislation governing working in medium risk confined spaces
- Apply appropriate industry specific knowledge for working in medium risk confined space
Important
A 1-day re-assessment course (CSC09R) is available for those who have previously completed this course or an equivalent. Candidates are eligible to attend the refresher course for up to 6 months after the expiry of their previous certification.
